What's the best way to buy guns?

Hi everyone,

I own a .22 rifle but want to get at least another shotgun and handgun with tons of ammo. The .22 I own was a gift from my father-in-law. I'm a little paranoid of the government and don't really want to be a registered gun owner. Aren't those the first people who will have their houses raided? (Assuming a worst case scenario with future gun control laws)

Should I try to buy from friends and family or should I not be so paranoid and just go to the store and buy my guns there?

Depends on your state or local law, New York City, Washington D.C. or way out in the middle of ... I buy mine private sale thru friends or gun shows.:s9:

Private sales. Check various classified ad sources in your area.

Private sale. Check out Craig's List (www.craigslist.org). Even though it is against their policies a lot of gun sales slip through. Also, check out www.thehighroad.org. If you know what kind of a gun you are looking for you should visit the various forums for that gun (like the Glock forum, for instance).

Always FTF, always at a neutral location, always anonymous. Feels crooked, but it IS legal.

There are over 200 million registered Guns in the US. A full bore house to house in unlikely here in Texas at least.

My guess is that a gradual removal is more likely, i.e. outlaw ammo, huge buyback programs, all transfers illegal, even to family member, illegal to transport ect. These guys have proved they are far more patient than anyone gave them credit for, if it takes and additional few years, is isnt going to matter.

Besides, if they come to you because you were registered, and do a house search, they are going to be doing house searches anyways. Your choice of actions at that point will be the same.

Unless you live in beautiful Kalifornia! :bear_w00t: Even private sales must go through a FFL dealer with all the wonderful paperwork involved.

Re: What's the best way to buy guns?

Some things to consider...I have frequented gun shows for 30 years here in the southwest and have observed:

Gun prices at shows tend to run HIGH...private sellers are not always realistic about what a gun is worth. They often want straight up retail (probably what they paid) and more (10% or so)...you may be able to bargain late Sunday afternoon, or maybe not.

You also have little or no recourse if the gun is broken or defective or just a plain crappy shooter...many guns sold are someone else's lemon. And as mentioned earlier, you don't know who you are buying from.

Buying from a reputable dealer that offers good customer service is a real PLUS...hang the paperwork. One dealer in our area will allow you to return a used firearm in exchange for similar item up to 10 days after purchase...that kind of service is what I want when I purchase a gun.

Just my opinion...:smokin:

Move to a state that respects freedom, like Arizona, where you can walk in to a gun show, buy a gun and walk out, no paper work, no phone calls, no background checks.

Thinking hard about it. It's tough to sell a house right now. I've been to tombstone wearing a gun on my side openly. Cool gun store in that town.

If you just buy under the table you are just giving them a reason to take all
your guns if they find out i think its better just to deal with a reputable dealer.

bump for more info on private sales.

Re: What's the best way to buy guns?

One bad part about private sales is that you pretty limited to what's being sold at the point of sale. Not sure what your state your in but for the most part, a NICs check only confirms that you purchased a gun within the last 24 hours, after that, you can sell it to another in-state resident.

Until we have national gun registration, I don't think you'll have to worry about the government knowing that at one time you purchased a gun, although if you do come across exactly what you're looking for through a private sale, I'd prefer that over a documented FFL sale anytime

In most states firearms are normal private property. Selling or buying a firearm from a private party is no different than buying a used lawnmower. The exceptions are California, Illinois, and most of the northeast. (i.e. liberal happy land). The other exception is that per federal law sales across state lines must go through an FFL. So if you live in Cali, you can't legally drive to AZ for a private purchase.

Contrary to popular belief, at most gun shows over 90% of the folks selling arms are licensed dealers, but you will find a few folks wandering around with stuff to sell. Smaller shows are usually better for private sales, since the cost (for a table/to get in) is lower.

These days the best deals can usually be found either on your local shooting forum or by doing a state specific search on one of the large national forums such as arfcom or THR. For example, arizonashooting.com has a dedicated for sale section.

Thanks for all the ideas everyone.

As I've never purchased a gun before, perhaps I'm misunderstanding the law. I know they run a background check (I have nothing to hide) but I also thought that you went into some database as a gun owner. Is that not true? I live in Utah. If there is no record of me owning a gun then I won't be so paranoid and I'll just go buy one from the sporting store.

Ok, 1st, Utah is part of the US, not the aforementioned Liberal Happy land.

2nd:
When you buy from a dealer, you have to fill out a federal form 4473. This form stays with the dealer, until and unless the dealer goes out of business. Then the ATF gets the forms.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Form_4473

The NICS check (background check) is a phone call the dealer makes to verify that you are not on the prohibited list. By law, the ATF is not allowed to keep a record of this information for more than 24 hours. Also by law, they are bared from creating a gunowner database. How much you want to bet they are deleting the info though?

Re: What's the best way to buy guns?

Years ago I did a FTF buy from a guy who ran an ad in the local "Trader" paper.

I bought a like new [100%] Remington Marine Magnum 12ga. for a third less than a new one. When I got home and tried it out the slide would lock up after each shot. Luckily I had a friend that was an A#1 gunsmith and he fixed it for $14. So buyer beware!

When I buy fron an individual I always get their name, address etc. If I ever get caught with a hot gun the police are going to know exactly where it came from.

Re: What's the best way to buy guns?

Don't hesitate to ask an individual to meet at a range so you can test fire the gun.

If the individual knows it's junk, the worst your out is time, as you'll know right a way or they won't show up to start with.

Not many con artist and hot gun sellers would show up at a public gun range. More than once I have fired at the local pay range next to police officers, there is always conversation and hey show me that thats neat.

Also, become familiar with your states local gun laws. Technicalities will work for you or against you. Do the right thing and play it straight, but the right thing changes from state to state.
